Fencing: The bane of my existence but a complete necessity

May 15th, 2013    Weather: Around 70 degrees and clear.

The farmer up the road and a helper showed up around 8am Wednesday morning. Linda got me to run down and unlock the gate (the U-Haul with all of our stuff was right inside) but they had already made it through thankfully.

We spent the next six hours or so erecting a fence around the garden and it would have taken much, much longer if we hadn't had the help of our farmer friends. They brought with them what I called "the pulverizer." It was an attachment to the tractor that through springs and the sheer weight of the machine, punched 8-ft tall, 10-inch wide poles 3-feet into the ground (unless we hit rock!). I'll work on getting a picture posted of this beastly, and majorly helpful, machine ASAP. Erica and I helped to load the fence posts and put them in place for the real farmer. We put up a new gate so a tractor could fit into our garden, making it accessible for future tilling. (On a side note, last year we put up a fence around six hop plants that we were trying to get going... no gate = mistake).

A 30x40 foot patch had already been tilled, but with the future in mind, the fence we put up was about 35 feet wide by 64 feet. We attached the fence panels with two inch staples by hammer. After working on the fence there wasn't much left to do except for eat dinner. We had nowhere to shower, so a baby wipe bath would have to do.
